Thai Cops and Hello Kitty

8 August 2007

This is one of the funniest news I have ever heard regarding Thai policemen. It’s been reported by Associated Press to virtually all major news agencies around the world including CNN and BBC. It’s revealed that the policemen who committed minor misdemeanors, such as arriving late at the office, parking in the prohibited place or littering, will be forced to stay in the division office and wear the pink “Hello Kitty” armband all day as a punishment. The nature of the offense of those who are punished will not be disclosed. Definitely the wearer of the armband would be shame and feel guilty of his misbehavior. “Hello Kitty” is a cute little big-faced cat cartoon character created by Sanrio company of Japan. It’s popular among little girls and young women in Thailand. It’s not n icon for a man and, of course, it is on the other side of the spectrum for a policeman. Whoever comes up with the idea of this punishment might get influence from his (or her) daughter… or is it a secret desire for oneself?
