Jake Shimabukuro – Hula Girl

Jake Shimabukuro - Hula GirlJake Shimabukuro - Hula Girl

Born on November 3, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jake Shimabukuro is a Japanese American musician, playing ukulele – a guitar-like string instrument with four strings, usually associated with music from Hawaii. His music is featured in one of the most popular Japanese movies of 2006 – Hula Girl, a true story of a group of girls from coal mine city trying to be Hula dancers in order to rejuvenate their hometown in the newly open Hawaiian Center in 1965. Thus, the music with ukulele by a talented musician of Japanese descendant is perfectly suited for the movie. In fact, the tune and melody of the theme song reflected the nostalgia mood of the film. If you love the movie and the music, you would definitely love this theme song which comes in both Japanese and English version. The lyrics in both version also emphasis the never-give-up mood of the film. Jake Shimabukuro himself writes the English version lyric and Jennifer Perri sings the song beautifully. The Japanese version of the song is performed by Teruya Miho (照屋実穂) along with Jake’s beautiful ukulele.

In Japanese Hula Girl CD single which was commercially released on September 20, 2006, apart from the two versions of the theme song from Hula Girl, we also get the sweet ballad “Wish On My Star” which is also featured in the movie as a bonus track.

Here are the lyrics for all three songs from the CD:

lyric by Jake Shimabukuro

Imagine living out a dream
A dream that wasn’t really yours
But through the journey you have learned
You must have had that dream before

Close your eyes and your mind
Now open up your heart
Can you feel the magic start…
All around you

In my dreams, every night
I dance across the sky
And the stars don’t seem so high
It makes me want to fly

So… Dream, dream, dream
That’s what they said
But not all great dreamers
Lay down beside their bed
Dream, dream, dream…
Here’s what I say
It’s all up to you

To go and make your little dreams come true
Imagine living out a dream
A dream that wasn’t really yours
But through the journey you have learned
You must have had that dream before

So… Dream, dream, dream
That’s what they said
But not all great dreamers
Lay down beside their bed
Dream, dream, dream…
Here’s what I say
It’s all up to you
To go and make your little dreams come true
It’s all up to you
To go and make your little dreams come true

Imagine living out a dream
A dream that wasn’t really yours
But through the journey you have learned
You must have had that dream before

ウィッシュ・オン・マイ・スター

I wouldn’t change a thing about you.
I wouldn’t ask the green to be blue.
I wouldn’t ask the birds not to fly,
Or change a thing in the sky,
Or turn hello to good-bye.

I wouldn’t ask the birds not to sing.
I wouldn’t ask the phone not to ring.
I just couldn’t ask the wind not to blow,
Or a boat not to row,
Or a trio to go solo.

(Chorus)
You are amazing,
Just as you are.
You are a flower in the spring.
You’re the light each morning brings.
And I adore you,
Just where you are.
You’re not the star that I wish on,
You’re the wish on my star.
