United Nations established the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1972 to stimulate awareness of general public regarding various global environmental issues. In addition to UNEP, the United Nations General Assembly also set the 5th of June as World Environment Day in which different city from around the world would take turns to host the commemorative event regarding the environmental issues every year.
The theme for World Environment Day 2007 is “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?” which focuses on the effects of global warming that would definitely melts the ice in the snow-covered areas around the globe and in turns causes a major impact for the world ecosystem. The main international celebrations of this year World Environment Day will be held in the city of Tromsø in Norway which has a nickname as “The Gateway to the Arctic.”
